The house was built on the exact site of an 18th century castle, the remains of which are still visible. Disappeared in flames during the Second World War, when the German army tried to requisition it, this castle, a large building flanked by a tower, dominated a walled estate of more than twenty hectares.
To its former owners, often colourful characters, we owe the presence of hundred-year-old cedars, sequoias and other American species in the park.
Today, from this tumultuous past, remain the outbuildings, the outside stairs of the original castle and the well.
